Preservatives

Although the topic of preservatives in cosmetics can at times become an emotive issue to some people, they are required to prevent damage caused by microorganisms and to protect the product from inadvertent contamination by the consumer during use.

At Dermaxime we use the minimum amount of preservatives, as we have direct access to a bio-chemical laboratory, which test the stability of our products at the lowest possible inclusion rates - and DO NOT USE parabens as a preservative.

We use far less than the directed minimum as required by the FDA and CTFA as we can, with excellent manufacturing, create stable and hygienic products with the minimum of preservatives.

Not only do preservatives prevent or retard microbial growth but also help prevent any pathogens from forming.

Various preservatives may be used in one product since the synergetic effect of different preservatives can help to form a far more stable product.

Further notes on preservatives in cosmetics

Good manufacturing processes can prevent contamination, and all cosmetic manufacturers should endeavor to produce their products in laboratories that conform to the highest possible standards.

Some consumers are concerned about the large amount of preservatives used in products, but well formulated products, such as Dermaxime, only contain the amount to keep the products stable, and an excess is not used, and the percentages used in our products more than conform to international standards, since great care is taken in the formulation as well as the manufacture of our products.

We use a commercial cocktail which contains:

  • Phenoxyethanol
  • Ethylhexylglycerin

Much has been written in the past regarding parabens, but when used at low inclusion rates, do not cause any adverse effects and it was noted in the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel's meeting in December 2005 that methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben and benzylparaben is safe. Reference 41 To read more on parabens, visit the US Food and Drug website by clicking here or the Australian Consumer Association by clicking here.

Since consumers prefer not to have parabens in their cosmetic products, we opted to use the very safe preservatives listed above.
